Primary Sources

This guide provides information about finding and using primary sources in various disciplines.

Digital Primary Sources

Physical Primary Sources

Many primary source materials are available digitally, through the Library catalogue and database collections. However, not all sources are digital, and some valuable primary source material is available in the Library's special collections: the Father Charles Brewer Celtic Collection, the University Archives, and the Library's Music/Audio Visual/Microform Room.

Father Charles Brewer Celtic Collection

This collection focuses on material related to the literature, folklore, history, language and music of the Celtic peoples, specifically, the Scottish Gael. As well as books and scholarly journals, the Collection includes primary materials such as manuscripts and early newspapers. The Collection is located on the third floor of the Library.

See the Collection webpage for more information.

University Archives

The University Archives collects, arranges and makes available material which documents the history of St. Francis Xavier University and its chancellor, faculty, staff, and alumni. This material includes photographs, personal papers, university publications such as yearbooks, and much more. The Archives are located in the basement of the Library.

You can find more information about the Archives on their webpage.

Music/Audio Visual/Microform Room

The Library's Music/AV/Microform room houses audio and visual recordings, as well as our microform collection of newspapers, journals and other sources. Audio recordings and newspapers in microform can be valuable primary sources for research.
