At StFX, before you begin hard or controversial conversations in classes or with colleagues, we encourage that you:
- Establish core institutional values - At StFX, our institutional values are: Academically Driven; Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility (EDIA), Community, Responsive, Sustainability. These values must be the heart of all conversations.
- Promote a climate of listening on both sides - All students and staff should have the opportunity to not only speak but be heard.
- Be Mindful of Your Own Behaviour - Notice how you are internally reacting/responding when others speak. Pay attention to how your words and silence are impacting the experience of others. What are you doing to create a welcoming environment for differing opinions?
- Wait & Don't interrupt - Allow time for reflection before responding, and do not talk over anyone else.
