Finding Scholarly Film Criticism (Articles)

The Library has several electronic databases where you can search for scholarly film criticism for your assignment.

  • If an article displays the "Check for Full Text @ StFX" this means we *may* have the full article in another of our databases. If you click on this icon it will check for access in those other databases.
  • If you find a citation for a great article but we don't have access to it at StFX, don't give up! Contact Lise or the Reference Desk to find out how to place a Document Delivery request. (This is a free service.)

A good database to start with is:

  • Some of these articles are from scholarly journals, but others are from trade publications and magazines. If you aren't sure whether a source is acceptable, always double-check with your professor!
  • Many of the articles you'll find in ProQuest will have PDFs of the full article available.

You should also try searching in these electronic databases (note: JSTOR and Project Muse are both journal archives -- they typically do not have the last 5 years' issues):

Formatting Citations in MLA

Here is an example for including a film in the Works Cited list:

Macbeth. Dir. Roman Polanski. Perf. Jon Finch, Francesca Annis, and
     Nicholas Selby. 1971. Columbia, 2002. DVD.

(Film title, director, performers, original release date, production studio, year released on DVD. DVD.)
